ARTIST STATEMENT

For the past several decades I have found my artistic vision in the wildness of meadows. Most recently in the historic meadows of the Blackland Prairie which is the substrate for my Texas home.

As an abstract artist, meadows become a field of action, always shifting shapes and changing colors with the prevailing winds of the seasons.

When I bring these experiences to my studio, I imagine the meadow, considering both nature and the idea of nature. The joyous swaths of color across my canvases depict both the real wildflowers and the notional ones.

I regularly experiment with mediums to best depict my experiences in nature; creating drawings, small gouache paintings, or the wall-filling oil painted canvases to find the ideal way to evoke a sense of gladness, a loose holding of something that hovers between representation and an impression. My work aspires to loosen the hold on what is seen and allow the memory of the moment to present itself.
