ARTIST STATEMENT

For decades I have been referring to my process as expressionistic map-making.

I have developed a process of mixing colors, making marks and layering canvases that has become my own visual language.  My relationships and experiences with my surroundings, other people, and with myself, provide a starting point for the process and imagery. I work using a combination of transparent and opaque layers of acrylic paint that are brushed, scraped and often times poured directly onto the canvas. The layered systems of color and repetition forge a sense of history, interdependence and chance which allows room for multiple meanings in my work. As personal meaning and influences evolve, my “map-making”

reconciles new information and knowledge with what is known. By merging the past and imagined scenarios with my daily life, I am making abstract work that reflects broader experiences of life and memory.
