| Artist's Statement |
My paintings come from secrets, and stories, from my memory and
imagination. The stories have no beginning and no end, every painting,
a prequel or sequel to the other.
Each painting is one scene, only a part of the story, a single frame from
a never-ending epic. The cows, cats, dogs and other creatures are the
actors and narrators. Old homes and abandoned buildings, with so
many secrets within their walls, and trees, with their gaping, woeful holes
and outstretched, armlike branches are the perfect props.
While the paintings often refer to a vast landscape, they are small in
scale. The viewer must look closely to see details that hint at meaning,
like peeking into a shadowbox to find what hides inside the corners or
placing your ear close to another's lips to hear the secret.
As an artist I encourage the viewer to interpret each painting, each
scene, as only a part of the story, one juncture of time and place in the
infinite universe of secret thoughts and memories.
