Bringing the depth of my paintings closer to the viewer has been one of my main concerns during my last few months of work. As a result in many cases the human figures or other shapes that appear as subject matters have become larger, the contrasts stronger and the colors more intense.
One of the challenges has been to keep the mystery of the subjects despite the fact that they are larger and closer to the viewer. I have been trying to do that by making the subjects interact more with the background. The way I bring the background of the painting back to the surface is by scraping or sanding the painting in the particular place where I want the background to reappear. That way, even if the subject is larger, it becomes more diffuse as well, appearing and disappearing in different places, in a constant interaction with the background.
Some of the paintings though are still similar to my previous work because I am very cautious about the evolution of my work; I prefer to evolve slowly to make sure that what I do keeps somehow reaching people’s hearts. If that stops happening my motivation for doing any type of art would probably stop as well.
